Flop Show....
I absolutely dread public speaking, so much as to avoid it at all costs. But last week, inspite of my ardent protests, my lecturer forced me to agree to give a presentation on a really drab topic about Biodiversity. I had to devote all my free time sitting in front of the computer working on powerpoint.
My earliest experiences with public speaking were very bad ones. Maybe its because of them, that I have never been able to hold my nerve. The first time I spoke before a crowd was in UKG in a declamation competition. The 'crowd' was more than 500 unruly brats who didn't give a damn of what I was saying and were busy throwing paper balls at each other and pulling the girls' ponytails. The first time I spoke into the mike, I was dazed. My voice kinda echoed to me and I heard it 2-3 times from the speakers. This was enough to break the concentration of a first time speaker who had not turned 4. I totally messed up and my class teacher had to prompt me on. I lost. It was a jinx that has not left me till date.
My presentation was day before yesterday. It was not difficult. It doesn't take Einstein to explain a few concepts seeing from the slides. But I still managed to make a grand mess of it. The biggest problem I faced was that my legs were trembling and my mouth went dry. I tried to picture the audience naked, but that got too gross, so I gave up and continued. Halfway through the presentation, my descriptions started getting worse and 2-3 times I plainly read from the slides- a strict no-no for any presentation. To make things worse, as I got more nervous I started to run through the slides to get it all over quickly. It was a 'fight or flee' question and my mind chose to flee.
One of the biggest problems was that it was a subject I was not passionate about. I don't give a damn about bleeding eco-activists who have to go and protest about everything. And the golden rule in speaking is that unless you really feel for the subject, you can never give an effective talk. Take Abraham Lincoln for instance, some of his speeches were absolute failures. But when he spoke about slavery, no one in the world could argue with him, it takes a genius to come up with "The government cannot endure permanently, half slave and half free". Also Hitler, he hated jews so much that when he spoke he influenced the whole nation. And if these great orators found it difficult to talk about subjects they didn't like, where do I stand.
I have my final year project seminar coming up. If I perform like this in front of the external examiners, I have absolutely no hope of graduating.

Oh boy! You're absolutely right that you need to be passionate about the topic to talk well about the topic. Public speeking in UKG??? man you are something...Dont worry too much about your project seminar...worry is not gonna help you in any way...just keep cool and present whatever you have got...its will surely be successful :)
I never realised you were in biodiversity too until I walked into the class and found you making the presentation. I think you are exaggerating here. There wasn't any fault I could find in your presentation! And, the little touches abt the annual income and other stuff was pretty good. If you were as tensed as you have mentioned, you never showed it a bit. And think abt the undivided attention you got and the quiet that prevailed in class..guess even the 'lecturer' wouldn't have got such a tranquil atomsphere..!
But, if you(dirty mind!!!!) are going take class again with that same thought ever again...you are going to lose students! I mean that!
So true. If you are passionate about a subject you will always come through shining and it takes less effort to talk about it.
boy! you made me to remember my first seminar in the final year.... i had the same kinda trembling .... it was reallly a romantic moment for me (lol.. ) [:P] ..........i thot i screwed up the seminar, but later my guide took aside and said you guys gave best presentation till now.... thnks to Defence labs where i did my project... Phew!!!!
You write pretty well...:) I don't think you would have done as bad as you have described it!
Anyway all the very best for your next public speaking venture :)
@KK:
Hehe...It was a declamation contest and I was the chosen because I was the teacher's pest(sic).
@Sindhu:
I messed up and forgot lot of my points. And I also spoke too fast. But thanks for the encouragment, I really appreciate it.
@Brute:

Thanks, that would be so nice of you...
@parvathi:
I am sorry, That's just a technique to reduce nervousness, in any case, I don't know what you look like...
Ganesh I was really laughing so much after reading this experience of urs!!!!!! Esp imaging naked audience! LOL!
Anycse I dunno y shd be so scared of public speaking....thats something I just love (provided Im well versed in the topic). For many events here I've been the Director of Ceremonies & like to make it lively for the audience. The latest show I did was for the Usha Uthup show, some indian cultural programs etc. & they all went on really well.
Am sure u write well so u cant be as bad as u;ve portrayed.
And thanks for the (indirect) tip on the public speaking by 4 yr olds....I've been after my son to go up on stage & perform. I shall probably go slow on the same & give him the choice fr few more yrs.
@has to be me:
It should have gotten easier with time....but in my case it just doesnt....
@ ganesh-I SEE YOU EVERYDAY NOW!Ok..let me come up and talk to you on hmmm tuesday is our next biodiversity class?..no wait thursday
hey ganesh...Biodiversity....BORING!...I completely agree with u..I had a choice of presenting tht or doing a seminar on genetic engineering on animals....so went for that...during presentations...forget the fact tht someone is evaluating u...focus on one person and rarely move ur eyes around the room...before presentation...talk in front of the mirror...Im serious..it really helps...You automatically get the flow if u do it twice in frnt of the mirror....I had several presentations this year and I goofed till the last min...but these tips helped me through on my last day...dont worry Ganesh,you will graduate in flying colours...GOODLUCK!!!
@Parvathy:
I think you are that skinny girl who sits in the last row.....
@Random:
Thanks for all those great tips but it it going to be quite some time before I face the crowd again..
I read somewhere that Bird Flu is expected to arrive in the USA or Canada this fall.
It said it killed almost 60% of those who got infected.
Is it true ?
What can we do to avoid it ?
